Tips from Toyota Corolla Buyers
Los Angeles, CA
If one person says it isn't possible. Ask the next person. Work the front end sales, back end sales, finance, and the guy who gives you the car at the end/porter/front end sales rep. Every step of the process has room to increase your side of the deal.
Pros: They wanted to close the deal with a profit on their end and a bargain on mine as soon as they realized I was buying a car no matter which dealer I went too combined with the fact that I had done my homework on the car.
Cons: None that aren't expected. They tried to claim it wasn't possible to stack 3 deals they had going on at once, while also bartering the price even lower. But it was possible because that's exactly what I did.
Purchased 2017 Toyota Corolla L 4dr Sedan (1.8L 4cyl CVT) on Apr 15, 2017
I read every page of this website. I needed a car that was fuel efficient, reliable, good resale value, not too pricey, ideally some good incentives, and a trusted brand. I whittled down to 10 specific models, and test drove them all with the test driving guides. The day I purchased I spent all day calling local dealers and sending them the pre-filled correspondence letters. A lot of them pushed back with not wanting to give the invoice or specific pricing, but all of those I told I wasn't looking to play games. That worked to get them to send me the info. or I just stopped dealing with them altogether. Eventually I had 5 dealers working hard to beat each others' prices. I had a unique experience because I made the mistake of negotiating with a dealer on the first car I test drove. They offered me a terrible starting price for the car, did not work the price at all, and pretended the rebates offered were them being nice and not the result of me happening to be there at the right time. They tried to negotiate for my trade-in at the same time and severely low-balled me. I ultimately left and sold my car separately to a used car dealership the day before buying, which was a much better deal since my truck is older. Ultimately, my advice is to read everything, do your research, and trust yourself. I was a savvy buyer because of this website, and was treated as such. I can always be satisfied knowing for certain that I got a good deal. These skills will stick with me for life.
Pros: They were willing to deal with me entirely over the phone and email, sent me a detailed invoice, and spent a considerable amount of time answering all of my nit-picky questions about fees and prices. The specifically have a policy that says if I get a signed purchase order from another dealer with a better price (as long as it lists the VIN, MSRP, Invoice, taxes, fees, OTD, etc. so they can make sure they are offering the same exact thing) they will beat the price by $500. When I told them my OTD price of $17,250 for all of my options and everything, they said they couldn't beat it by $500 even though it was their policy. They apologized profusely and were very embarrassed over the phone, and even said "You should go to that dealer because that price is unbeatable. The only thing we could do is match that price." I ended up going there because it was about 1/5 of the distance from where I lived.
Cons: Walking in they knew I was the guy who had a quote they were matching, and that I was a savvy consumer so there was no way they could talk me into extra features or unneeded things. Because of this I was given a cold treatment once actually at the dealership. I could tell they also put me with an Associate and Finance Manager who were able to handle someone who is no-nonsense such as myself, but I liked this fact. Even having negotiated everything over the phone and email fully, it took me 3 hours at the dealership from start to finish, which was extremely annoying for me.
Purchased 2014 Toyota Corolla L 4dr Sedan (1.8L 4cyl 4A) on Jul 31, 2014
They told me the Costco price was the lowest price possible. I'm not really sure about that now.
Pros: Friendly sales staff. Not very busy.
Cons: We had to wait a while. There was no Corollas on the lot. We bought one that was to be delivered in the future.
Purchased 2011 Toyota Corolla 4dr Sdn Auto LE on Aug 6, 2011
Great salesman. First cabin personal.
Pros: Large selection, no little closing cubicles. Professional every step, price based on your ability to show that your money is important to you.
Purchased 2010 Toyota Corolla 4dr Sdn Auto S on Nov 12, 2010
Very good experience working with Mike.
Pros: No nonsense, no haggling. Came back with single price offer and happened to be slightly below our target. We had some special needs (out of state purchase, had to overnight papers to sign) but they handled it very professionally.

Typical haggle. Have a couple of drinks before you go in and stick to your guns. All of the dealers in the area, except CarMax, were anxious to "earn" my business.
Pros: The price. That's it, but as you see I got a good one after nearly 3 grueling hours of having to deal with the sales tactics.
Cons: Irritating transparent sales pitch and tactics. Hrad to understand the salesman's broken English.
Purchased 2010 Toyota Corolla 4dr Sdn Auto LE on Jun 1, 2010
Very large and overwhelming at first, but once a member of the staff begins to handle your visit, they don't let it feel big at all. They are very attentive
Pros: Staff, flexability
Cons: Wait time, an hour between saying that I was buying the car and seeing the finance people. Trouble with insurance processing, had to wait an extra day to get the car
Purchased 2010 Toyota Corolla 4dr Sdn Auto S on Apr 5, 2010

Best price in the area, 3 cars at this price. 14,988 after toyota rebate.
Pros: No sales pressure to buy extras.
Cons: Smaller dealership, so may not have too many choices. Do not have the 3day/$250 return policy like the other bigger dealer in Sunnyvale, CA.

I contacted the internet sales manager and set up the price ahead of time.
Pros: The salesmen were very friendly and helpful.
Cons: It was busy and we had to wait a while to get all the paperwork done. It wasn't a huge issue though.

I had my own price in mind 16480 for Corolla - XLE- JBL-6CD Changer-Blue Tooth-Alloy Wheels-Sun roof Moon Roof - Tilt - (Floor mats $200 is a waste)
Pros: They have built nice building.
Cons: The salesman was okay but his superwiser was like you know kind of reluctant and he managed to show off and pressed on money back warranty which I fall but sounds okay. Another thing I did not like they did not beleive the price I told them I was getting at other dealer. But it was better experience than Stevens Creek near Sunnyvale where they kind of insulted by throwing my offer in the garbage can. I was about to go for Malibu after that incident.

My car buying experience went well, and I would recommend this dealership to a friend. Ken Meagher was my sales person, and he was very friendly and didn't pressure me at all. I negotiated the price online (compared with what I was quoted at another dealership). I asked them to match the price, but they beat it by $186. When I arrived at the dealership, the car didn't have the same options, so I said I would only purchase the vehicle if they threw them in at no extra charge. And they did! World Toyota has a deal with my employer to receive an additional $250 off your best negotiated price. At the end, I showed my employee ID, and received the extra $250 off.
Pros: Weren't pushy. Didn't try using high pressure tactics to force me to buy the car. Everything was very clean inside the dealership.
Cons: Took a very long time for them to detail the car once the transaction was complete. I was tired and ready to go home.

Wilson Toyota of Ames, Iowa
Satisfied with buying experience, professional and honest, courteous.
Pros: Had car in stock, no games, straight internet pricing and not pushy sales, offered service contracts and extended warranties, but did not overly agressively push on customer. Allowed fair money for trade in.
Cons: Would not take the amounts from this website into consideration, due to no Iowa numbers, so here is first Iowa sale number.

Overall satisfied with dealership and buying experience. They really played hardball starting with a very high price. Tried many of dealership tricks to include finally agreeing to my offer then adding $500.00 dealership fee. Manager brought out to try to convince me to higher dealer fee, but relented when I gave him 2 minutes to accept my offer or I would leave.
Pros: This dealership has some high quality sales people. Polite and professional. They did many of the usual car sales techniques, but not to the point of being obnoxious. Dealership has a large inventory and had exactly the color, trim and options that I was looking for. Finance part of transaction was fast and accurate.
Cons: This is a nice dealership. Good people. The worst quality would be their high price. But they are in business to make as much money as they can.
Purchased 2009 Toyota Corolla LE 4-Spd AT on Jan 2, 2009
They tried to BS me with some "non-optional" items that were hand written and taped to the window next to the sticker price jumping the total sticker price to over 22K. However when I said, "No thanks, I don't want the car if I have to pay for those additional items!" The non-optional items magically became optional.
Pros: I had done my homework and new what I wanted to pay, after we got past the initial BS they tried to pull off (and failed) they were very straight foreword and the whole process went very quick.
Cons: Well in my experience dealers lie about things, and this dealer was no exception. Fortunately I had done my homework on the car and my credit. So I would say the worst qualities of this dealer are typical to all dealers.
Purchased 2009 Toyota Corolla S 4-Spd AT on Jun 10, 2008
Nice to deal with
Pros: No pressure
Cons: I received a mailer the next week advertising the same car for 900.00 less then what I paid. Made me feel bad about my purchase.

Typical - a lot of waiting. No one really knows whats going on. Jermaine was really friendly and not in that super fake car salesman way.
Pros: Agreed to price ahead of time and ensured the car we wanted was actually there before we drove 100 miles to get it.
Cons: Refused to show us the Costco pricing sheet.

The internet manager was really helpful online, but when my wife and I went to the lot, he really didn't bother to help. Other than that Dado really helped us find what we were looking for.
Pros: Sales people really help you find what you are looking for. Do not rush you. Really big inventory. Friendly environment, Dado is the man!!!! Very competitive prices.
Cons: internet sales manager could have been more friendly, nonetheless Jim gave us a really good deal on our new car.

I tried a websites like Aol Autos Best Price and Zag at first, then tried emailing the dealerships, and even tried CarWoo, but I got the best price just calling the dealerships independently and getting in contact with a salesperson and working between all of them. I'll never waste time or money on a bidding service again-the lowest bid I got from CarWoo was still $200 above what my final offer was, and from a dealership over 5 hours away. The closest dealerships were easily $1,000 above my lowest offer when negotiating by email or phone.
Pros: I appreciated being told about the graduate student cash down payment of $1,000 with regular financing. That way I could get the $1,250 incentive for the LE and the $1,000 off on top of it with regular, 3.45% financing for 3 years. I am pleased there is no penalty for paying off the car early. There was a little bit of runaround in the finance department about the extended warranty, but the gentleman answered my questions directly when I asked something specific like "What is the total additional cost to the car?"
Cons: The LEs they had left only had 6-CD stereos which was an additional $200 I could have done without. Nevertheless, they had the color I wanted, and the employees were affable, and very low-pressure.
Purchased 2010 Toyota Corolla 4dr Sdn Auto LE on Dec 29, 2010
Dealership generally sucks and is awful from many experiences I have had and heard from there. This time around got a decent salesman and got them down with the cash for clunkers and talked them into the college grad rebate as well, wasn't easy but worth the great price
Pros: Not much, price.
Cons: Awful to deal with in many aspects from what I have seen/heard. If they have a deal though and it's totally worth it obviously try to go for it, I scored.

Great sales staff. They want to move cars and price to do so
Pros: Great prices right off the bat no messing around with back and forth. Gave great price right away. Will use again.
Cons: Processing took 2 hours but I think that is normal.
Purchased 2010 Toyota Corolla 4dr Sdn Auto LE on Jul 23, 2010
I was concerned they'd try to pressure me into an extended warranty or some other insurance plan I didn't need during the signing of the papers, but they didn't. Ended up being a very good experience.
Pros: Salesman was very nice, excellent at answering all my questions. I held out for a week before finally deciding and he was very pleasant. Very informative.
Cons: I probably could have gotten another $500 off if I'd tried.

I sought email bids for the best price on a specific trim package amongst 30+ Toyota dealers in Missouri, Oklahoma, Kansas, Iowa, and Arkansas.
Pros: Price negotiation by email was quick and painless. The staff friendly and efficient. We were in and out of the dealership in one hour.
Purchased 2010 Toyota Corolla 4dr Sdn Auto LE on Dec 5, 2009
Positive experience, received an email from dealership listing special sale price and requested drive out price on model listed in stock and within an hour price was provided. Internet salesman was bout courteous and professional.
Pros: Ease of obtaining requested information and no pressure on buying anything additional. Salesman handled all questions and concerns in a timely manner.

Sout Coast Toyota
Costa Mesa, CA
Called up a couple dealers in LA, OC. Aimed for 16,000 OTD. Best offer - 16,300 OTD from dealership in Costa Mesa. Probably could have knocked off 100-200 more if haggled more and did more comparison shopping with other dealers. Only contacted a handful of dealers. Technically, the rebate should have been 1,500, but they bumped it to 2,000 to make the numbers work out for the OTD price. The "official" selling price was (final price + 2000). TTL were calculated based on the "official" price. (The invoice price that I stated above was from Edmunds.com with the following LE options: keyless, cruise, mats, AWG).
Pros: Dealt with Frank. Fast, Friendly Service, no hassle, no tricks, no hard sell. Came in with the check, signed the papers and that was it. No hard sell for the usual "warranty/misc options" from finance either.
Cons: None really. It's a smaller dealership, so no fancy showroom. No big deal.

Vann York Toyota
High Point, NC
Very good overall experience. Was looking at their website on Memorial Day and saw a Corolla S with sports package as Hot-on-the-Lot for $15990. Gave them a call an hour before they closed and asked for $16000 OTD. Salesman countered with $16,450. Went down to test drive it, and was able to negotiate it down to $16,300 OTD with free carpet mats.
Pros: Very low pressure. Dealer was willing to work with me over the phone before coming down in person. Very friendly and professional, didn't try to sneak any additional fees or warranties on the car. Sales team overall worked well together.
Cons: Can't think of any. This was the second car I've purchased from them. Got a better deal this time around, but have been pleased with both experiences.

Ourisman Fairfax Toyota
This was the second Toyota I've purchased from the dealer. They post some of their prices on the web site, so pricing is straightforward. Minimal pressure on upsells (extended warranty, etc).
Pros: Good choice of models, good prices, minimal pressure by sales and closers.
Cons: The "Auto 4 Life" program is a terrific ripoff, and they really push it hard.
Purchased 2009 Toyota Corolla LE 4-Spd AT on Mar 24, 2009
Very satisfied with the purchasing experience. The salesperson that I dealt with was willing to negotiate and was not high pressure. The finance manager, on the other hand, was very high pressure and sold me an extended warranty for way too much. I will be canceling this warranty and purchasing from another dealer now that I have done some research.
Pros: Great salesperson. Low pressure sale, good price.
Cons: High pressure finance manager. Was not prepared for all the upgrade packages. Ended up paying too much for the extended warranty.
Purchased 2009 Toyota Corolla S 4-Spd AT on Jan 27, 2009
The dealership was very busy and we had to wait a little longer than we wanted. The finance department was very interested in selling an extended warranty. I didn't take it because I think extended warranties are generally a bad deal (see consumer reports April 2008).
Pros: The internet department gave me a great teaser rate over the phone -- About $500 less than any local dealership. This is what brought me to their shop.
Cons: As with all car dealers, this and all other dealers make you feel as if you are trying to drive them out of business by negotiating for a lower price. They all say that I'm getting it fro their price -- They can't go any lower without losing money. However, when I pointed out that if they're not making a profit don't sell it to me, they don't accept my suggestion. They eventually accepted my price when i stood up and showed them I was going to walk -- Even though they sent another manager in to plead the higher price. In the end, I probably could have saved some more money by continuing to drop my bid until they finally turned me away -- Likely a mistake on my part. Best advice -- Eat before you get there, have your financing already worked out (Get a pre-approval letter -- With rate your lender will give you -- and take it with you), Arrive late in the afternoon -- when they're tired, Know exactly what you want (Shop around at other dealers first), Give a low-end bid and be ready and commiteed to walk if you don't get your price. I used realcartips.com to help me target the price I thought was a pretty good deal. In the end, the buyer already has what the dealers must have -- MONEY!

Dealer referred through Costco auto buying program. Dealer never called - we had to contact them.
Pros: A nice sales person.
Cons: Spent a LOT of time waiting for the deal to get approved - even though it was a pre-negotiated price through Costco auto program. Even more time waiting for the F&I person. And the car's pre-delivery cleanup was terrible - we discovered an upholstery stain and sticky stuff on the paint after we got the car home.

I am a female and I had a female sales person, so I felt more comfortable
Pros: Good reputation.
Cons: The manager pressured me to buy an extended warranty. Also, he said the sales person forgot to charge me $200 for Toyota floor mats, which I paid.
